Do I need a Practicing Certificate?
09 August 2009
This is a question that all of us should address on an individual basis particularly those who currently do not have one and work in or for local government legal departments. The need for a PC is a matter between an individual solicitor and the SRA and an individual’s employer’s view is of no consequence. The NEC is aware that some members have had some difficulties when coming to apply for a PC for the first time of after a career break.
George Curran, current Law Society Council Member for SLG and former Chairman of SLG has produced a Discussion Paper which deals with the many issues and considerations involved when attempting to determine the question of need. It is recommended reading.
The NEC is keen to be aware of any particular difficulties faced by members in this regard and where it can to lobby for and negotiate any changes that may be necessary. If you have experienced problems and are willing to share the details on a confidential basis, please let us know either through your Branch Secretary or through the Vice Chairman who is leading for the NEC on this topic.
