SLG is supporting a high profile Law Society initiative to communicate and embed good practice on diversity and inclusion across the legal profession.

The initiative which was originally conceived by the Society of Asian Lawyers and BT seeks to maximise the opportunity for the purchasers of legal services to drive change and support continuous improvement on diversity and inclusion within the legal profession by embedding it into the procurement process.

The framework for doing this is the Procurement Protocol through which purchasers of legal services commit to collecting and considering standard diversity information in the appointment of legal advisers by requesting information outlined in a model questionnaire.

Similarly, as signatories of the Charter, providers of legal services are asked to make a commitment to collecting this information, publishing the diversity profiles of their UK staff and striving to adopt best practice in all areas of diversity and inclusion.

This initiative is the product of extensive consultation and we believe that the Charter will be a useful tool to ensure that both purchasers and providers of legal services are able to clearly demonstrate their commitments to diversity and inclusion and crucially to translate these to practical and measurable actions.

The Law Society will be launching this initiative at a high profile event in July and is seeking the leadership and support of individual Local Authority Legal Departments as founding ‘Protocol Partners’ to communicate at the event.

Please see the attached briefing pack for full details.
